Seeing as it is International WordPress Day, I’ve written a new WordPress plugin that auto links a twitter at username (like @lantrix) in a post automatically.
Developed initally on WordPress 2.3, it has successfully been tested on WordPress 2.7.1.
Most of the other plugins out there either did this only in their “badge” or “widget” or where too full featured. This is a simple and quick plugin to get links in place to twitter people for the lazy blogger.
Visit my plugin page, give it a try and let me know what you think.

That’s an awesome idea; I haven’t seen anyone else do it. Much easier then typing the whole HTML tag.

Thanks. Need drives the invention, and I was sick of typing out all the HTML too. I will actually update the plugin next and make it into the proper wordpress format; for inclusion into their plugin repository.

This just converts the twitter ID to the proper URL, I take it, could it be extended to call and display the associated avatar too, do you think?

Sure could. In what fashion would you like it to display. I don’t have the time to do at the moment due to my full time IT job. I’m also thinking of making hash tags work as well, and moving the plugin to the wordpress directory.

I’ve updated it for linking to #hashtags and @usernames in posts now, but no movement yet on the avatar. It could be done using CSS. Not sure yet. I’ve also requested for it to be included in the wordpress plugin directory. Head over and have a look at the plugin page.

It’s not exactly the same but I have created a WordPress plugin that will display a link to the commenter’s twitter page and will also replace the commenter’s avatar with their twitter picture.
It can be found here http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/twitter-avatar/
Let me know what you think,
Thanks,
Thomas

I really like the plugin, but sadly enough it doesn’t work when posting from an external blog editor. I write my blogs within Windows Live Writer and not through the WordPress web interface. Is it possible to work on that?

I’ve only just started looking at Windows Live Writer, at the request of a client. I’ll have a play with it one day soonish and see why it wont work.
That said, the plugin parses the post content once ON the blog and inserts the link then – so maybe Live Writer is formatting the @ symbol as a HTML instead:
