Apple released Bootcamp 2.1 with OS 10.5, which allows you to dual boot to Windows XP/Vista on your Mac.
Subsequenet to that release, there was a driver update for the Multitouch trackpad which was suppose to improve souble tapping, etc. However it caused a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) the moment you double tapped, courtesy of applemtp.sys.

Many people sent suggestions to Apple to fix this, but it seemed to be falling on deaf ears.

Little did we know that Apple were releasing a new version of the touchpad driver included with Bootcamp 3.0 on the Snow Leopard install DVD.

I’ve updated my Bootcamp to 3.0, and indeed the applemtp.sys driver version has increased to 2.1.2.112. The FAQ for the Snow Leopard update states that Bootcamp 3.0 has:

“Improved tap-to-click support – The ability to tap the track pad to click the mouse button is now supported on all Mac portables that run Boot Camp.”

In my tests, so far, there has been no more crashes. I get to use double finger right click tap, and the track pad responsiveness that I got in the older buggy driver is back as well.

Thanks Apple. No more BSOD.

This is the same issue I’ve posted on a couple of forums. It’s seemed detailed enough to be a blog post, so here it is. Under 10.5.8 (Leopard) I was successfully using my Merlin XU870 ExpressCard (supplied by ISP) with Three Broadband (3) in Australia. I did not use the 3 drivers, but used the Leopard WWAN built-in to connect. There was never an issue as Leopard detected the card as a “Novatel Wireless HSDPA Modem”, and I configured the Network Advanced settings for 3 postpaid services as:

Vendor: Novatel Wireless Inc.

Model: GSM

APN: 3netaccess

CID: 1

I installed Snow Leopard as an Upgrade (not a fresh install) after having a CCC backup and a Time machine backup in place.

When I plugged in my 3 expresscard, 10.6 detects the card, initialises and populates the WWAN icon with “Telstra 3G: Not Configured”.

It detects the card as a “Novatel Wireless HSDPA Modem”, and automatically configures the Network Advanced settings of the card, as shown:

The question is: Why is the APN telstra.datapack setup as default?

I am able to change the APN to 3netaccess, which results in a successful connection to 3:

Wed Sep  2 15:38:25 2009 : Initializing phone: ATE0V1&F&D2&C1S0=0
Wed Sep  2 15:38:25 2009 : Initializing PDP context: AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","3netaccess"
Wed Sep  2 15:38:25 2009 : Initializing with secondary command: AT$NWPDN=0
Wed Sep  2 15:38:25 2009 : Dialing: ATD*99***1#
Wed Sep  2 15:38:25 2009 : Waiting for connection
Wed Sep  2 15:38:25 2009 : Connection established
Wed Sep  2 15:38:28 2009 : Serial connection established.
Wed Sep  2 15:38:28 2009 : Using interface ppp0
Wed Sep  2 15:38:28 2009 : Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/cu.wwan
Wed Sep 2 15:38:32 2009 : Could not determine remote IP address: defaulting to 10.64.***.***
Wed Sep  2 15:38:32 2009 : local  IP address 115.130.***.***
Wed Sep  2 15:38:32 2009 : remote IP address 10.64.***.***
Wed Sep  2 15:38:32 2009 : primary   DNS address 202.124.68.182
Wed Sep  2 15:38:32 2009 : secondary DNS address 202.124.65.22

The annoying thing is the WWAN menu still shows Telstra when connected.

Looking at the WWAN system file:

cd /System/Library/Extensions/IOSerialFamily.kext/\
Contents/PlugIns/AppleWWANSupport.kext/Contents/\
Resources/
less countryCodes.plist

it has only Telstra, Optus and Vodafone carriers listed. I think this could be the cause of the default APN being populated in the Advanced settings. I can’t find where the “Telstra 3G” in the WWAN menu item is coming from though.

I’d appreciate if anyone can give their thoughts on how to fix this.

I’ve just cloned this blog to a development version on my Macbook Pro. The Mac has Apache2 installed by default, so I just had to get mysql working.

Downloading MySQL and installing on Leopard is a breeze with the native package.

I migrated my database (dump/restore) and recreated my wordpress user, but still kept getting this error:

Error establishing a database connection

The user could log into the database from the console as shown:

lantrix@lexx:~ $ mysql -u wordpress -p

mysql> use wordpress;

You can turn off this feature to get a quicker startup with -A

Database changed

+-----------------------------+
| sk2_blacklist               |

So what is the problem?

Google provides an answer, with a log lived post from My Macinations providing the solution. It’s all to do with correcting your php.ini with the proper MySQL socket location.

Now, back to testing my new version of the Twitter Tags wordpress plugin. #hashtags now work!

I’m stuck with a whole bunch of problems getting code to compile and co-operate nicely on my new MacBookPro. I’m compiling my own PHP, but it defaults to compiling for the i386 (32bit) architecure, which then fails when Apache2 running in 64bit mode tries to use the 32bit DSO for PHP5. Compiling PHP5 as 64bit then fails linking against the i386 pgsql lib, and so on. I really need everything using the x86_64 architecture.

How does this all relate to readline under Leopard?

The problem is the Intel Core2 Duo is a 64bit CPU. Apple supplied apps like Apache2 are compiled as Universal binary AND for 32/64bits. This means there are 4 architectures in the binaries.

lantrix@lexx:~ $ file /usr/sbin/httpd
/usr/sbin/httpd: Mach-O fat file with 4 architectures

When I compile PHP as x86_64 of course it complains that the pgsql libs are also not x86_64, and when I compile postgresql as x86_64, it complains the fink readline library I use is not x86_64. Talk about architectural dependancies! I will need to do another post in depth on the fun had with that whole set of dependancies.

This is how and why I arrived at compiling readline on my Mac 64bit intel under Leopard.

On to the readline problems. I start the compile of readline as x86_64 architecture, and this occurs:

gcc -dynamic -arch x86_64 -bind_at_load -arch_only `/usr/bin/arch` -install_name /usr/local/lib/libreadline.5.2.dylib -current_version 5.2 -compatibility_version 5 -v -o libreadline.5.2.dylib readline.so vi_mode.so funmap.so keymaps.so parens.so search.so rltty.so complete.so bind.so isearch.so display.so signals.so util.so kill.so undo.so macro.so input.so callback.so terminal.so text.so nls.so misc.so xmalloc.so history.so histexpand.so histfile.so histsearch.so shell.so mbutil.so tilde.so compat.so -lncurses

Google is your friend, and MacOSXHints forum user dmacks has an answer why this occurs.

The readline compile scripting is ugly (doesn’t use standard build tools, then fakes it…poorly at times). You need -dynamiclib not -dynamic to compile a shared library on OS X, but this indicates a deeper problem: need to patch support/shobj-conf to know darwin9* as a Darwin/MacOS system if you’re on Leopard (I think readline5.2 only recognizes darwin8*, i.e., Tiger).

Still this is not a fix…. But some further searching and I find a Christopher Rasch on a Watir mailing list who shows how to get around this. Effectivly you need to change the makefile for readlines shlibs to use the -dynamiclib switch when compiling.

This gave me a local x86_64 architecure readline library under Leopard. I was able to successfully compile PostgreSQL as -arch x86_64 against the readline library as well.

Telstra have now announced they will be selling the iPhone as well. According to the Age, since Telstra’s NextG network covers 99% of the population the iPhone will get good coverage due to it using the 850Mhz 3G frequencies.

Additionally the Age have reported on the pricing Telstra will offer on their bundles:

The cheapest monthly plan will be $30, paying either $279 upfront for an eight-gigabyte iPhone or $399 for a 16Gb model. Customers who do not want to pay upfront could sign up to an $80 plan for the 8Gb model or a $100 plan for the 16Gb model.

I’ll still opting Vodafone for now, but lets see what the Vodafone pricing and data usage policy will be compare to Telstra’s. If they are almost the same (and I doubt it) it could prompt me to jump carrier. The coverage that NextG have is unrivalled in this country – but has been pricey to use for data so far. SMH Blogger Adam Turner correctly speculates that even though the pricing is out, there is no mention of data usage. Don’t get too hyped about Telstra’s offering just yet. Despite the fantastic infrastructure they are usually the most expensive.

Just to show I’m not entirely biased, Telstra are taking pre-registrations at their website. Thanks to @IdleThoughts for the heads up on this.

Practically un-announced, Apple have made available a limited number of TV shows on the Australian iTunes Music Store.

While I commend the move, I have to question their pricing. The US store offers TV shows @ USD$1.99 per episode (with Some more expensive) The Australian Store offers the episodes @ AUD$2.99, which equates to approximately USD$2.85.

Why the difference? You can’t tell me Apple has set-up different infrastructure and have different hosting for Media in Australia. They are not paying to send the data over international links. So why the over 40% increase in pricing from the US?

I think the local media companies and licensers got greedy. It is as simple as that.

It’s not just the price that gets me down. The content is different. The continually stupid regionalisation of content has shown to be a road block to people GLOBALLY. For example:

DVDs (remember region coding at the end of the last decade?);

TV – why do shows still get screened outside the USA weeks or months later;

Movies;

or music.

Yes this is a global economy people. The ease of Torrent sites to circumvent this division of content drives the end user towards increased use of torrents. It is now apparently easier to get a season of your favourite show from the internet than wait for it to appear on TV; or on iTMS. The only people wising up to this are the Movies Studios whom now do simultaneous global releases, because they were losing too much money.

Until the pricing on the Apple store is the same, and Australia gets the same releases as the US at the same time (on TV or on iTMS) – people will continue to use torrent sites as their source of the latest TV shows from the USA. Plain and simple – “Listen up Media conglomerates!!”

Update: It looks like they did release a press release yesterday.
